Muscat’s Hidden Stairway

The Wadi Al Kabir hiking trail (often called the Hamriya to Wadi Kabir hike) is a local favorite for a reason. It bridges the gap between urban life and the rugged Hajar Mountains. The path takes you from the valley floor up to a high plateau, where the city noise fades away and you’re left with nothing but the wind and the sight of the turquoise sea in the distance.

Things to Do

  • The Sunset Ridge Walk: If you time your hike for the late afternoon, you’ll reach the summit just as the sun dips behind the Muscat skyline. The view of the city lights starting to twinkle below is magical.
  • Trail Running: Because parts of the trail are wide and well-trodden, it is a premier spot for trail runners looking for steep elevation gain to test their cardio.
  • Bird Watching: Keep an eye out for Egyptian Vultures and Eagles that often circle the thermal currents rising from the wadi.
  • Fitness with a View: Many locals use the initial steep climb as a natural outdoor gym. You’ll see plenty of people getting their daily steps in while enjoying the fresh mountain air.
  • Places to See

  • The Qantab Viewpoint: Once you reach the highest point of the ridge, you can see all the way over the mountains to the coastal village of Qantab and the blue Gulf of Oman.
  • The Abandoned Stone Houses: Along the trail, you’ll find the ruins of old stone structures used by goat herders decades ago—a quiet reminder of Oman’s nomadic history.
  • The Shura Council View: The trail offers a unique "birds-eye" perspective of some of Muscat’s grandest architecture, including the Majlis Al Shura (Consultative Council) building.
  • Ancient Rock Formations: The geology here is fascinating; you’ll see layers of ophiolite (oceanic crust) that have been pushed up into the sky over millions of years.
  • Trip & Itinerary Advice

    Best Time to Visit

Season: October to April. Since there is very little shade, hiking here in the summer is not recommended. Time of Day: 6:00 AM for a sunrise hike or 4:00 PM for a sunset trek. Avoid the midday sun at all costs.

    Pro Tips

Difficulty: This is a Level 1–2 hike. It is family-friendly but involves a steep initial climb that will get your heart racing. Gear: Wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. The rocks can be loose and "shaly," making it easy to slip on the descent. Water: There are no shops on the mountain. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person, even for this shorter trek.

    Suggested 2-Hour Itinerary

  • 4:00 PM: Park near the Wadi Kabir substation or the designated trailhead (check Google Maps for "Wadi Al Kabir Hiking Trail").
  • 4:15 PM: Begin the ascent. The first 20 minutes are the steepest—take your time!
  • 4:45 PM: Reach the ridge. Walk along the plateau toward the Qantab side for the best sea views.
  • 5:15 PM: Find a safe rock to sit on and watch the sunset over the Muscat mountains.
  • 5:45 PM: Begin your descent before it gets completely dark. Bring a headlamp just in case!
  • 6:15 PM: Treat yourself to a fresh juice or a shawarma at one of the many local spots in Wadi Kabir.
